How to improve indoor air quality in the office

Everyone is aware of the problem of air pollution, but we usually only think of it as a problem with outdoor air. The truth is that air quality inside confined spaces such as offices can also become polluted.

Why does indoor air quality become polluted over time?

This is due to a combination of continuous pollutant sources such as furniture, carpets, paint and other building materials, which release VOC’s over time. Office equipment such as copiers and printers release fumes and particulates into the air from the chemicals contained in the toner, when the toner is heated.

Dust particles can accumulate on surfaces and on fabrics as well as in HVAC filters. Over time this build up of dust can become airborne with movement, exacerbating respiratory issues and allergies.

Many cleaning products, disinfectants and air fresheners release VOC’s and other chemicals into the air.

High humidity, condensation, or moisture from leaks can lead to mould, mildew and bacterial growth. When these mould spores become airborne, they can cause allergies and respiratory issues.

Also the plain fact that offices often have a high occupancy level which leads to elevated CO₂ levels, particularly if ventilation is poor. Perfumes and personal care products can also contribute to polluted indoor air quality.

Below are some ideas to improve indoor air quality

  1. 1. Natural Ventilation
  2. The most obvious and often the best way to improve indoor air quality is to improve ventilation naturally by simply opening some windows to let fresh air circulate. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help when offices are located in cities and other urban areas, due to the poor quality of the air outdoors.

  3. 2. Ventilation systems
  4. Ensure HVAC systems are well maintained and operate efficiently to bring in fresh, filtered air and remove dust particles.

  5. 3. Material choices
  6. Choose low emission furniture and paints.

  7. 4. Minimize VOC emissions
  8. Choose eco- friendly cleaning products and natural air fresheners.

  9. 5. Humidity control
  10. Regulating the temperature in the office isn’t just about keeping staff happy. It’s important because it affects humidity. A good way to do this is by installing a good HVAC system and then as mentioned earlier, making sure it’s well maintained.

By implementing these simple practices, the quality of indoor air within the office can be improved and maintained creating a healthier and more sustainable work environment.
